Neighbour uses power tools all day, everyday and my two month baby won't sleep during the day because of it!?

I would like to start of by acknowledging that to somebody reading this, I may sound like a very easily irritated person, but I would like you to understand that I’m at my wits’ end here.

My next door neighbour is a stay at home husband, while his wife works full time. Him and his wife aren’t the most sociable – they say hello if we’re ever out gardening at the same time. Other that that, that’s as far as their communication goes. I have a serious problem though, the husband is a DIY fanatic (I think he’s building a boat) and everyday, without fail, is out in his back garden using his very noisy power tools for hours on end.

I have a two month old baby who can’t nap during the day because the tools keep her awake, thus she gets grumpy and since she is so young, I’m worried that her not being able to nap during the day may have some effect on her growth. The noise is one thing, but he can maybe use a electric saw for 10 second, stop it and then a few seconds later saw for anther 10 seconds. It’s driving me insane! Sometimes I just like weeping because of it all. I’ve even driven to my friends house, just so me and my baby could have a quiet nap.

I’ve asked the man to stop. I’ve asked the wife to ask her husband. I’ve even suggested that he stops for a few hours during the day. But according to him, it’s his “right” to use his tools whenever he wants. I’ve contacted my local authority who have came out and assessed the situation and the man’s tools are JUST under the noise limit and therefore they can’t do anything about it because he isn’t breaking any law.
We can’t move house because of the current financial climate and me and my husbands family live in Ireland so we can’t even stay with one of them during the day. I’m at my wits ends! Short of putting one of the power tool’s cord around the mans neck, does anybody else have any advice?

Thank you for all your time.
“Honestly, are you sure the noise is the reason your baby doesn’t nap?”
Yes, I’m sure. If the noise was consistant such as a lawnmower then maybe she would be able to sleep through it, but he usually uses saws which, like I said, he stops and starts every 10 seconds of so, thus she is constantly being startled and unable to sleep.

Your neighbor is insensitive. I wonder if they have kids where they would relate to the problem they are causing you. That being said, one possible solution might be to contact a company that specializes in soundproofing interior spaces. They may be able to help you to make a room that reduces exterior noise levels to an imperceptible volume. Good luck and you have my sympathy.

That would be aggravating, but the fact is that most people don’t understand why people need stuff to be quiet during the day, and some people who do know, don’t care because as he said it is his right to do what he wants through the day. Be glad he is at least respectful enough to not work all night long. And to be honest you can’t really expect him to quit his work so the neighbor can take a nap. The only thing I can think of to try is to go to the room in your house that is the furthest away from him and get a box fan and turn it on high. This is what I do and it really helps to block out a lot of noises. Good luck hope you and your baby get sleep soon.

Wow. The neighbor is really annoying. Tell him the way you told us, he has to listen to that reasoning.

The fact is, the guy DOES have a right to use his tools in his own yard, as he is doing. If he is not breaking any law, then you do not have a right to make him stop.

Honestly, are you sure the noise is the reason your baby doesn’t nap? Babies are pretty good at getting used to things in their environment and can sleep through just about anything. My kids routinely sleep through our landlord mowing the lawn right by their windows, which would wake me up every time! On the other hand, many 2 month olds don’t nap very well or for very long. There can be many reasons for this. Does your baby nap well when you go to someone else’s house, or when you are traveling?

I would work on ways to help you and your baby deal with the noise. Maybe a white noise generator or some gentle music playing in your baby’s room would help. Make sure all the windows are shut at naptime. Try ear plugs or ear muffs.

this sounds exactly like the situation my parents were in when me and my sister were babies. he would use power tools all day and even up until 10pm at night (how were we meant to sleep) anyway my parents talked to him and it was the same old story as you have said. so my dad got so fed up that one week he got me and my sister up at around 12am and told us we could play and to make LOADS of noise (of course we thought this was hilarious and loved it) my dad also played loud music at night and after one week of this of course the neighbour came round and said “can you stop your children making all that noise” my dad just replied “oh can you not sleep? well my children cant sleep because of you either so we either compromise or my kids are free to play that loud”

the guy agreed and did give my parents a couple of hours a day without the power tools on, soon after he had his own child and then actually came round and apologized to my parents for not realizing how much these things disturb children.

now this all work 22 years ago, i just hope you have some luck now as this is basically all you have left.

    good luck hun
